Every now and then, it’s perfectly okay to splurge on nail polish. I adore Essence nail polishes as they are cruelty-free, great quality, creative and affordable. Over the past month and a half, I picked up a few of their nail polishes, so I thought I’d share my thoughts with you.
Out Of Space Stories Nail Polish (07 1000 light years away)
I love space, and I love how this theme is trending at the moment. It doesn’t get more sci-fi than this nail polish. It really is the only Out Of Space Stories nail polish that stands out to me. It’s black with silver glitter particles of varying sizes- like outer space in a bottle.I realised that there is a technique to make this nail polish look beautiful. Initially, I was quite disappointed with how dull the glitter looked. It didn’t give me the effect that I was looking for, so I used my Essence Quick & Easy Sponge Nail Polish Remover to remove the nail polish. However, instead of removing the nail polish, the sponge nail polish remover appeared to “polish” the glitter particles and made them shine! I dipped all of my fingers into the sponge nail polish remover and it instantly became my favourite nail polish. So, if you weren’t happy with 1000 light years away, I recommend applying two or three layers, wait for it to dry completely, and then dip your nails into the Essence Quick & Easy Sponge Nail Polish Remover to make that glitter shine. It’s weird, but it works.
Holo Rainbow Nail Polish (01 hello holo)
I am not quite sure as to why Essence refers to most of their recent products as “holographic“. Is it really holographic? Should we rather say “irridecent“? Am I overthinking this? It’s definitely a trend at the moment, and I appreciate the fact that Essence is always on top of those trends. This bottle is packed with a whole lot of silver glitter. I prefer the look of hello holo to the rest of the shades in this range. A thin layer of this nail polish over another nail polish can give it a pop of glitter, which is a nice touch. If you’re ready to go big, drop a thick layer of it on your nails and spread it out evenly.
In my opinion, this nail polish is a hit. I love the fact that it shines in all facets of the rainbow. The Holo Rainbow range is also a great, cruelty-free, affordable alternative to some of the more expensive glitter nail polishes from other brands. I will definitely be wearing this throughout December.
Glow In The Dark Top Coat (36 girl on the moon)
Fireflies. Those are the first things that pop into my mind whenever I think of things that glow in the dark. They are 100% magic, and that is exactly what I was hoping to experience with this new top coat from Essence. The contents of the bottle are a milky yellow-green colour- the typical “glow in the dark” shade. Two layers of this top coat, over your nail polish of choice, is supposed to be enough to give your nails that moonlight glow.
There are a number of reasons why I recommend giving this top coat a skip. Firstly, it’s said to add an unwanted milky yellow-ness to your nail polish (it’s not visible in this photo, but it’s there). I can’t think of a single situation in which that could be flattering. Secondly, it changes the texture and finish of your nail polish as this top coat is slightly sandy. Thirdly, it takes AGES to dry. I’m not joking, after half an hour I could swipe all of my nail polish off with my finger and I was left with a sticky mess. Lastly, it is hardly effective, which is obviously disappointing as one would only buy this top coat for its effectiveness.
Blossom Dreams Mirror Effect & Iridescent Effect Nail Pigment (+ Water Based Top Coat)
Blossom Dreams was one of Essence’s trend editions. I was lucky to find both the mirror effect nail pigment and the iridescent effect nail pigment. I found it quite fascinating, and surprisingly easy to use. After applying a base coat of your nail polish of your choice onto your nails, dip your finger into the powdery nail pigment and buff it into your nail. I really, really enjoyed this new product, and I have seen that they’ve added these to their permanent range. The Mirror Effect gives your nails a shiny, silver look, whereas the Iridescent Effect gives them more of a pearly look. It is important to use the water-based top coat, rather than a normal top coat, as that will ensure the pigment doesn’t break down. The only downside of this is that it is a little bit messy to use.
I really want to try one of Essence’s new Brushed Metals nail polishes in the shade 04 it’s my party. If I do, I’ll update this post with my thoughts. If you’re looking for good quality, affordable nail polish, I highly recommend Essence’s The Gels nail polishes.
