It’s already tough finding good cruelty-free makeup and skincare products in South Africa, but finding cruelty-free hair products is a completely different ball game. Our shops are filled with brands like TRESemmé, John Frieda, Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Schwarzkopf– none of which are currently cruelty-free (see this list). This made my life kind of difficult, and I’m sure it’s one of the reasons why most people would rather not go cruelty-free. That was until I realized Oh So Heavenly has a whole range of hair products, from shampoo and conditioner to an oil elixir. Is this a new thing? I don’t know.
I guess I have to give my mom credit for this discovery. She loves coming home with random things, and a few weeks ago she came home with the Multi-Use Oil Elixir. I was skeptical at first (to me, Oh So Heavenly was the brand that you turn to when you need a cute little gift-set or stocking-fillers), but I gave it a go. We have been using it most days ever since, mostly because of the incredible scent, and it inspired me to try out the rest of the range.
The Repair ‘n Care range targets people with dry, damaged or dull hair. Any time I see something that targets “damaged” hair, I take it because my hair has been damaged by both heat and bleach (and I have split ends 99% of the time). There are a few other ranges though: Care & Caress (all hair types), Deeply Detox (all hair types), Love Your Colour (colour treated hair), Silky Smooth (frizzy or unruly hair), and Full Of Life (flat or fine hair), as well as a range for kids.
There are four products in this range: shampoo, conditioner, a treatment mask and an oil elixir. They’re enriched with Fortifying Keratin and Argon Oil. I’ll talk you through my personal experience with each of them and what they have done for my damaged hair.
Nourishing & Repairing Shampoo
“Helps intensively nourish, strengthen & repair hair. Strands are significantly stronger & protected after just 1 use*.”
This shampoo feels thick and luxurious. It does a seriously fantastic job at cleaning my hair and stripping all of the oils away. I have found that my hair feels way too dry and bare afterwards, as if it has rid my hair of everything good and everything bad (much like an antibiotic that kills off the good and the bad bacteria). If you’re the type of person who skips out on conditioning, I highly recommend that you don’t skip out on it when using this shampoo. Does it make my hair feel nourished and stronger? Not significantly. It smells good though, and I believe it is extremely important to use in conjunction with the rest of the range, so I will continue to use it.
I bought a 200ml bottle for R34,95. There are other sizes though, including a travel size.
Nourishing & Repairing Conditioner
“Quench thirsty & damaged hair with this moisture-rich, repairing conditioner. Strands are significantly stronger & protected after just 1 use*.”
The conditioner, at first, felt quite underwhelming. After the thick, luxurious feel of the shampoo, I kind of expected the conditioner’s texture to feel even better. Instead, it felt very average. I once used a sample conditioner from a product called Quick Grow, and that was literally the best conditioner that I have ever used, but I don’t think that they’re cruelty-free and they’re way more expensive than OSH, so it’s unfair to compare the two. Anyway, after the shampoo stripped my hair of everything, I was happy to have soft, healthy-feeling hair again. I definitely underestimated this conditioner, and the power of the shampoo and conditioner working in conjunction with one another. It’s really good.

Nourishing & Repairing Treatment Mask
“Helps to intensively nourish, strengthen & repair hair, protecting each strand at its core against damage.”
This is where the range is taken to another level! I am so glad that OSH included a treatment mask. It is ideal for people with very dry, damaged hair and it promises to make one’s hair stronger while protecting strands against breakage (when used with the above mentioned products). As you can see from the picture, this mask is really thick. I use it after I have washed my hair with both the shampoo and conditioner in this range, and I leave it in for about 5 minutes. I don’t think that my hair has ever felt this soft and healthy without going to a hairdresser!
This product comes in a 220ml container for R59,95.
Multi-Use Oil Elixir
“Helps to intensively nourish, add shine, improve colour vibrancy, soften & protect hair against split ends.”
Like I said before, this is the first product from the range that I got. I apply it to my wet hair after washing and before blow drying. It’s supposed to nourish one’s hair, add shine to it, improve colour vibrancy and protect it against split-ends and damage (including external aggressions, such as UV damage). It has really helped my hair look less dull by adding shine as well as nourishing it without making my hair greasy, but I can’t tell you if it has protected it from any further damage. I’d like to believe that it does. I have naturally curly hair, so it gets crazily frizzy after blow drying. This oil has helped with taming it a bit. It also smells incredible, much like a subtle version of the rest of the products from this range.
This product comes in a 50ml container for R59,95.
I am really, really, really impressed with Oh So Heavenly right now. I have replaced all of my old hair care products with this entire range and my hair is loving me for it! I am obsessed with the scent of all of these products and it lingers on my hair for days on end. It feels really good to finally have some great cruelty-free hair products to choose from, and they’re all made in South Africa. I want to try the Silky Smooth range next because my hair is both frizzy and unruly all the freaken time.
This entire range can be found at Clicks stores. If you’re on a tight-budget, take my advice and do it while Clicks has their 3-for-2 special on. Thats what I did. However, these products are already so affordable so I wouldn’t be too disappointed if I missed out on the special. You can also purchase them on the Clicks online store.
